In March 1972, Dr. Tofail Ahmed, a distinguished social worker and philanthropist, established the country’s first hospital for children, “Dhaka Shishu Hospital”, with the help of the Bangladesh government and some voluntary organizations. The National Economic Council (NEC) of the Government of Bangladesh approved the construction of a 250-bed children’s hospital in December 1974 with the option of increasing it to 500 beds. In March, 1975, the Ministry of Health allotted land for the Dhaka Children’s Hospital at its present location in Sher Bangla Nagar.
In 2021, the Jatiya Sangsad passed the Bangladesh Children’s Hospitals and Institutes Act (Act No. 19 of 2021) which came into effect on September 22, 2021. Since then, Dhaka Children’s Hospital and Bangladesh Children’s Health Institute merged to become known as Bangladesh Children’s Hospital and Institute, which is being run as a statutory body of the Government of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Children’s Hospital and Institute with 681 beds is committed to providing advanced child health services.
